Fan Casting the Expendabelles
They recently announced a fourth installment of The Expendables franchise. For those who don't know, these are the action films headed up by Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham surrounded by a cast of the best action stars in recent years.
I don't know about you, but I've been anxiously awaiting an all-female version of the films. It doesn't look like that is happening but if it did, here are the actresses I'd like to see and what their roles would be.
LINDA HAMILTON
The OG of 80s action, Linda Hamilton kicked so much ass in Terminator 2 and recently returned to reprise her role as Sarah Connor looking every bit the badass she always was.
I see Hamilton in Stallone's role. She's the leader of the group and the central character to the story.
JENNIFER GARNER
Before family films became her forte, Jennifer Garner was a bona-fide action star. Her years of dance training helped make her fight scenes in Alias look amazing. She stepped back into the action world awhile back with the film Peppermint which I loved but critics didn't understand (as usual).
Garner would fill Jason Statham's role as the second to Hamilton's lead and best friend. Garner also has the action resume to be the resident martial artist who gives a beat down with extreme skills same as Statham does.
ELODI YUNG
I'm a fan of Elodi Yung from her portrayal of Elektra Natchios in the 2016 second season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Netflix series Daredevil and as Jinx in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Yung has a legit black belt in karate making her an authentic ass kicker on screen. She also has the acting chops to pull off anything as seen on her new series The Cleaner.
In the original Expendables movie, Jet Li is an important part of the team. I see Yung filling his spot and maybe even adding in some humor the way Li did.
LUCY LAWLESS
Everyone knows Xena, right? If not I recommend you go watch it after you finish reading this blog. Lucy Lawless played Xena for eight years and she established herself as one of the best action stars in recent years.
With her height and wry sense of humor, I see Lawless in Dolph Lundgren's role. In the first film, Lundgren's character is a little off in the head. In the past, Lawless has done a nice job of showing extreme emotions without coming across as silly.
GINA CARANO
Gina Carano's resume speaks for itself. She was the face of women's MMA before Ronda Rousey ever came along. From there, Carano established herself as an actress in film and television, most notably on The Mandalorian.
Former UFC champion Randy Couture was in the original Expendables and it only seems fitting that Carano fill that role.
On a side note, I know Gina back from her fighting days. She is an absolute sweetheart. Don't believe everything you read online.
HALLE BERRY
Aside from being a talented actress, Halle Berry is tough. She's played some notably bad ass roles including John Wick 3.
I recently saw her play an MMA fighter where at the end Berry faced off against real life UFC fighter Valentina Schevchenko who is a beast! Movie or not, that was a ballsy move.
I see Berry in Terry Crews spot. A no-nonsense force of destruction. She would make an impact for sure.
SIGOURNEY WEAVER
You can't have a collective of the best female action stars without including Sigourney Weaver.
Weaver broke the mold when she starred as Ripley in Alien. She established that females can not only lead a film, but they can kick ass doing it.
Expendables saw Arnold Schwarzenegger make a couple of cameos. Weaver would be excellent in this role. She comes in, makes an impact, and steps out. Her clout and legendary status is second to none.
ANGELINA JOLIE
Angelina Jolie started out as a dramatic actress. But after she starred in Tomb Raider, the feature film adaptation of the beloved game franchise, she started doing more action films.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and Salt soon followed proving that Jolie has the chops to do both drama and action.
I see her in the role Mickey Rourke had. The wise mentor-type character with a tragic backstory. Yeah, Angie would crush that emotional scene Rourke did in the original. She's that good.
That is my fan casting for what would be an all-female cast of an Expendables type film. When I say I see these actresses in the roles their male counterparts played I don't mean they should be a reboot. I'm just demonstrating how they could round out the team in the same manner they did in the original Expendables. I didn't get to the villains, and I'm sure there are many actresses I forgot, so let me know your choices below in the comments!
