What You Can Learn From Writing Your First Draft

As authors we have alot of personal revelations while writing. I thought Id share a few of them with you through my 1st Draft Diary while I finish my WIP.

Today I learned to stop looking at the word count.

I usually write by hand but Im in a time crunch to finish so I'm on the laptop for the first draft this time. As you know in the corner is the word count. I have a certain number of words in mind so it was distracting me.

Then I told myself it's the first draft. Don't worry about the word count just get the story down. You can fill in or edit down later. The important part is getting down the bones.

Sometimes even the best effort can have parts that stop the momentum while writing. When this happens I find it best to skip that scene and move on to another one to keep the flow going. Then, when I return to the sticky scene I have better insight and fresh eyes.

I love writing the badguys. Usually, badguys are fun because they are unencumbered. I make sure to give as much attention to the villains purpose as I do the hero.

My characters need to feel as real as possible.

But during book 3 of my urban fantasy/superhero series, I found two of my villains falling for each other. Whoa, didn't see that coming!

I guess when you're writing a baddie with the codename of Lust anything can happen. Who knew lust would turn to love!?

Let your characters surprise you 📚✒

Something about the Dhar family has always been strange. Summoned out to Dhar manor, Silke Butters is about to find out these socialites are sinister as well.  Privilege and powers are not a good mix, and it appears the Dhars have massive amounts of both. Silke's own powers have become stronger and she's going to need them. When Sin Squad members Lust and Pride show up uninvited, Silke finds herself caught in a tug-of-war for control. Donning the guise of her alter-ego Karma, it's up to her to put an end to their plot. One devastating night inside Dhar manor unravels hidden histories that may cost Silke everything.  Kaged is Book 3 in Silke's Strike Force.
